Men’s Underwear Poll: The classic sport brief – hot or not?
March 19th, 2011So, I received this e-mail from a follower of the Guys’ Underwear Blog, and it got me wondering; is the classic sport brief on its way out in favor of more modern designs?
Here’s what Edwin wrote:
I’ve always liked sport briefs, particularly the ones by Calvin Klein. The U1060′s with their thick, soft waistband provided the feel and look of a jockstrap in the front, while maintaining the characteristics of a brief in the back. I only bought 2 of those at the time and was amazed at how quickly they sold out.
I had similar experiences with the U4152, which had the ribbed cotton look and a thinner, less comfortable waistband. After about a year or so, I couldn’t find them for sale anymore. The latest examples are the U2745 with its characteristic red stripe on top of the waistband, and the superior U1683, arguably the most comfortable of them all. Both of them are out of stock, everywhere. You can still find some on eBay but most of them are in size Small.
Currently, Calvin Klein has no sports briefs for sale. None. Apparently, no other brand has anything comparable, except for 2(x)ist’s Sliq sport brief which has a very thin waistband and is less comfortable than most of the comparable Calvin Klein products were. Do you happen to know why this style of men’s underwear seems to be all-but-dead? I find this development interesting.
Here’s what I think…
It is true that some of the huge mainstream brands like CK seem to have abandoned the classic sport brief (tanga) cut. Their reasons for doing so could be many; lack of sales, tough market, fashion changes etc. I speculate that guys who used to buy the classic CK sport briefs have now turned to brands such as 2(x)ist, N2N, Magic Silk, and Sloggi.
I don’t think, though, we’ll ever see the sport brief vanish completely. It’s a very distinct cut and one enjoyed by many guys, especially for sports purposes, obviously.
Judging from my sports underwear poll from last summer it doesn’t seem like guys in great numbers are about to drop the traditional sport brief (or the jockstrap) in favor of, for example, the compression short.
And in fact, just yesterday, N2N revealed a stunning new sport brief as part of their 2011 underwear range launch.

February 28th, 2011Who’s Valdamar? I’m Braxton! Braxton was my “pen name” for a while since I had been writing for another blog under Valdamar.
However, I’ve decided it’s time to drop the facade and be who I am; Valdamar. So hopefully none of you guys are too confused, I would be but it doesn’t take much to confuse me. Well that out of the way we have a great week’s worth of stories to share, even one with a cat who’s an underwear fan!
UPDATE: Naked Cowboy
Last week it was reported that the Naked Cowboy was suing the Bold and the Beautiful for stealing his character. Well, no new news on that yet, however, I did find out he has sued before.
Once there was a “Naked Cowgirl” who apparently liked to flip the bird as her character, so our Cowboy sued her because that would look negatively on his character the Cowboy. And he has even sued the Mars Company for having one of their M&M’s dressed in his likeness.
I also found out he makes an estimated $5,000 an hour in addition to all the marketing around this persona of his. He is big time, folks. Robert Burck (the Naked Cowboy) does all he can to protect his character, trademark and image. So you’ve been warned, do not wear a white hat underwear and boots!
National Underwear Day in Brazil… Or not?
During February Brazil has it’s national underwear day. This is the day when Brazil’s underwear models and undie lovers strut through the streets only in underwear. However, February is about to end and it hasn’t happened! It’s not on the calendar nor is it in anyone’s plans. What the heck happened, Brazil?!
Underwear sledding in Germany
17,000 spectators showed up to watch 26 men and women, even a 70 year old man, compete in an all underwear toboggan race in Germany. The winner took home 1,000 euros. I would have taken this champ home!
Nixon Caught in Underwear
No not president Nixon. In the land of Underwear, Australia, Ricky Nixon, AFL (Australia Football League, Australian rules rugby) player – now manager – has been caught in his underwear. A 17 year old girl turned in a video showing the two together, Nixon in his underwear, and claimed he had an inappropriate relationship with her. He denied this strongly, however, later admitted only to “inappropriate dealings” with the teen. Oh that’s much better.
New Undies Every 20 Minutes
Mike Cvik, 6’9” NHL official (referee), packs plenty of underwear when he travels. Now the 48 year old isn’t afraid of having accidents as he changes his underwear inbetween each period. He says working on ice you need to stay dry and fresh so at the start of every period he has on fresh sparkling clean undies, now at the end of the period I don’t know. If Cvik’s underwear collection is anything like mine he can afford to change skivvies every 20 minutes and have plenty of clean under pants to spare.
Flash Underwear for Free Tickets
Some rethinking is being done to attract people to the Edinburgh Fil Festival in Scotland. One idea being considered is to give free tickets to people who flash their underwear at the ticket booth. Now it wouldn’t be any underwear it would be special “branded” underwear. I don’t know if they would be made special for the festival of if it would be a sponsoring brand. Hmmm maybe BawBags? Awesome undies with a great slogan “May Contain Nuts”!
Croota Comes to America
Exquisite Imports out of Alexandria Virginia has announced that they have become an official importer of Croota, an Australian underwear brand focusing on fun cuts, colors and comfort. The undies will run about $18.50 a pair and bundles of 3 for $50. We will have some reviews of Croota underwear out soon, and check out our earlier posting on the company.
Week in Underwear Crime:
Underwear Cat Burglar
We often hear of people who steal underwear from other people. And in some weird way we can kind of understand, as awful as it is. However in one California neighborhood people have been missing underwear from their clothes line for some time now. The culprit was finally caught… it was a CAT! Dusty the klepto cat has stolen over 600 items over the past three years. In addition to underwear he’s stolen shoes, towels and toys. Reports indicate he is not remorseful and has no intention of stopping.
Lick Lick
A 23 year old man in El Cajon, California, was arrested after jumping off a trolley, where he reportedly had licked several women’s hand bags, and ran around a Toyota dealership in just his underwear. He was apparently under the influence of drugs. The severity of this I can’t determine until I get a picture.
Not Just For Smuggling Budgies Anymore
The term “Budgie Smugglers” has become famous for men’s bikini swimwear but a man in New Zealand used his underwear to smuggle geckos and skinks! I’d like to see that Geico commercial. Animal trafficking has become, and has been, a big problem. One guy in Thailand was caught at the airport with three large suitcases containing 143 different turtles and tortoises! What the heck! I am always fascinated, yet somewhat ashamed, of what men are willing to smuggle in their underwear.
PICTURE OF THE WEEK:
This week our picture takes the prize for no reason other than WOW! In my writing I come across hundreds of underwear pictures a day it seems like. Most of them are hot, yet seem to contain the exact same guy cut out of the mold over and over again.
But once in a while I see a picture that stands out and I can not take my eyes off of, and that happened when I saw this. And sorry, but I know nothing about the picture. If you know who this is or why it was taken please share. Suddenly I have the urge to wear my white CK’s.

CK deployed the same promotion tactics that have worked so well for Armani; strap a pair of sexy underwear on a major international star and blast him all over the Internet.
And so Hollywood hunk Kellan Lutz ensured Calvin Klein all the attention they could have ever wished for.
Early reviews were generally positive, and since the launch the range has been quite popular and is still carried by most of the major online men’s underwear stores, including UnderBriefs.
Now that that the CK X range seems to have grabbed a permanent place in the spotlight I want to share with you Guys’ Underwear Blog’s official review of the Calvin Klein X Cotton Hip Brief.
Calvin Klein has an impressive track record when it comes to high quality underwear, and honestly, I have never been disappointed with any of the many CK briefs or boxer briefs in my collection.
But usually quality comes at a certain price – and this also holds true in the case of the X Cotton Hip Brief.
So, is this hot-looking brief worth its persisting premium price tag?
In short: absolutely!
Let me elaborate in the review below.

| Style and look | The X Cotton Hip Brief is a standard low rise CK cut, very similar to the very popular CK classic, the Body Hip brief. It sits low on the hips and provides a very sexy frame for your assets, both front and back. A very roomy and well-supporting, though not overly enhancing, pouch and a distinctive contrasting waistband with large bold writing makes for an exclusive and fashionable look. You will get nothing but a nod of respect and recognition from anyone seeing you in these babies. |
| Suitable for? | Here’s the thing: The X Cotton Hip Brief is actually a slightly misleading name for this brief as it is actually made from just 45 % cotton mixed with 42 % modal and 13 % elastane. I LOVE modal, and the usability of this brief increases significantly from this fabric mix. It feels extremely comfortable and stretchy. Together with its exclusive look, this means that you can wear the brief for all types of purposes – especially long days of work where comfort is a necessity. Go for the the X Micro Hip brief if you want more ventilation, for instance when looking for underwear for sports purposes. |
| Fit and quality? | I wore a size M for a 32 inch waist. The fit was perfect. No need to size up or down. I mentioned it before, but it deserves to be reiterated. Hello Everybody! Happy third week of 2011!
I hope it has been a great year for everyone. I am enjoying it so far. I went to a Men at Work underwear party last week all decked out as a Construction worker. I had the hat, belt, timberlands, gloves, glasses, reflective vest and wife beater yet was missing the pants!
I was going to wear a hot pair of briefs to show off but thought “is this really what a construction worker would wear?” So instead I wore a pair of Hanes tighty whities which along with the wife beater were torn and filthy!
And my friend went as a cop, it was great! Anyway enough about me, let’s see what’s going on this week in underwear news:
UPDATE: UBS Dress Code Revised:
In my first ever weekly report, posted January 1st, I told you about the USB banks crazy 44 page dress code for their employees that even dictated what kind of underwear they should wear.
Well, due to much criticism they have revised it and I have heard now men are once again free to wear the underwear of their choice. A victory for underwear freedom!
Sam Attwater’s Boxer Tan Line:
Sam Attwater, the English actor from the British soap the East Enders – now more commonly known for his appearance on Dancing on Ice – has admitted the first time he went to get a spray tan he wore boxers and ended up with a horrific boxer tan line. So now he has stated “next time I’ll be wearing something a lot smaller”. Let that be a lesson for you men.
Used Underwear Ban:
The Rwanda Bureau of Standards has placed a ban on the selling of used underwear. The reasons including health are that they don’t want the country to become a dumping ground for substandard products.
So men you’ll have to find a new place to sell your used underwear. By the way I have a few if you want to buy them.
Underwear App for iTunes:
Yes an app called “My Undies” is now available; however it’s designed for children ages 2 and up. It includes 4 games, one in which you design underwear patterns, a match the undies to the cuddly creature game, feed underwear to the monster and a memory game. I want it!
Calvin Klein Collection Commercial:
CK has had some great ads in underwear and fashion over the years and have pioneered the field in many ways. This past week they did something new. Sunday, during the Golden Globes, Calvin Klein released its first full collection commercial featuring underwear model Tyson Ballou and a female co-star.
The collective commercial showcased the spring 2011 collection with items from sunglasses to furniture and of course underwear. I guess it’s a cheaper way to advertise everything at once rather that all items individually.
Hang Your Underwear on the Statue:
Legendary cricket umpire Dickie Bird is up in arms with what has been happening to a statue erected in his honor. Apparently it has become the custom to hang your underwear off his raised right hand, along with a few other things.
Dickie, 77, has taken his complaints to the city counsel in his home town of Barnsley, home of the statue. Underwear on a statue, I may have to try that.
Ricky Gervais is Gold:
Hollywood is not too happy with Ricky’s controversial, yet mostly honest, comments he made about the industry and its stars during their self-glorifying Golden Globes.
However, before the show Gervais visited the Ellen show where he said he only wears his ellen undies for special occasions. So Ellen gave Ricky a custom pair of Golden pants which he wore and posed for a picture that Ellen posted.
I have to say Mr. Office man looks pretty good.
The Week in Underwear Crime:
Again with this stinking Underwear Bomber! Enough! Now he’s being forced into court, I am not going into anymore details because I’m done with him. However there are some other things that have been going wrong with underwear.
Underwear Thief:
While 24 year old kayaker Tim Taylor (not from Home Improvement) was 6 weeks into his 5500KM 6 month solo trek around New Zealand he found himself up a creek without a paddle or underwear.
While he was sleeping thieves came in and took vital equipment he needed for his trip and as he said “they even took my dirty, wet undies… I couldn’t believe it… I can’t imagine why they would want to touch them”.
Looking at Taylors picture I think I would want to touch them. However this adventurer is continuing his journey and enjoys the break from his job as a tractor driver.
Underwear Battery:
A man in Lynn, Massachusetts was found assaulting another man on the bathroom floor of his apartment only wearing his underwear.
The victim was drinking with his friend, the assailant, when he admitted to having dated his sister. Whether the man was already in his underwear while drinking with his buddy or was stripped somehow I do not know, but I am intrigued.
PICTURE OF THE WEEK:
I have to say the most outstanding picture of a man in underwear I have seen this week goes to Rick Gervais. I have to admit I am impressed with how he pulled this off.
You would imagine that he would be comical in underwear as many people find humor in a man in underwear. However, Ricky made this look quite sexy and I think he may have a new image here… Yummy!

Alexis is a Belgian photographer who does amazing photos across a number of categories, including various situations with men in underwear.
Some of her photos are classic lifestyle-like underwear shots, and others – like the first one below – are true art.
This particular picture is inspired by the current political crisis in Belgium, Europe.

Skiviez Men’s Underwear Fashion Show Pictures
July 7th, 2010About a month ago, online men’s underwear retailer, Skiviez, had their first ever live underwear showcase, i.e. a full on underwear fashion show, complete with seating, a bar and, of course, a catwalk!
The other day they released a string of photos from the event for the rest of us to enjoy.
The festivities took place in Richmond City in early June, and the male underwear models wore the latest styles from some of the most trendy brands, including 2(x)ist, Baskit, Calvin Klein (all some of my favorite brands), and Gregg Homme.
All sorts of underwear cuts made it to the runway including, briefs, trunks, boxer briefs, jockstraps, and so on.
Apparently, this was quite the exclusive event, as only the store’s closest supporters were invited. Of course, next time I expect to see an invitation in my mail box :) Ha!
I am not sure if Skiviez will release video footage from the show so for now we’ll have to settle for the pictures.

Oh, and just a reminder. It’s been a while since my last review which is due to the fact that I am still in Thailand on vacation. Next week, however, I will kick off a brand new series of reviews from such hot brands as Todd & Terry, Piss & Vinegar, and N2N – just to mention a few.

For each of the categories HisRoom’s panel of expert judges selects a favorite style. But the overall winner is chosen by popular vote on Undie Award website.

Vanity Fair has done it again!
The famous magazine has struck gold by convincing photographer superstar, Annie Leibowitz, to shoot some of the best and the hottest soccer stars in the world in connection with the 2010 Football (soccer) world cup in South Africa.
Did I mention that these soccer stars are wearing nothing but flag underwear in the colors of the country each of them represents?
This will be the Vanity Fair World Cup Cover for the June 2010 issue…Oh and there’s behind-the-scenes video as well at the bottom of the post. You’re welcome.
Do not forget to check out the pics of Argentinian soccer star, Lionel Messi, posing as underwear model!

The best Calvin Klein underwear pics
April 15th, 2010Calvin Klein underwear pics is a daily occurrence if you’re a regular follower of the underwear blog community. And today I was reminded of the brilliance of Calvin Klein photography when I visited one of my favorite blogs, Speedorex. Please pay him a visit as some of the pics I am posting here are taken from his underwear blog.
Anyway, this post is a tribute to some of the best Calvin Klein underwear pics. By no means do I claim that this is an exhaustive list. It’s simply a selection of some the super hot photography.
This is what makes Calvin Klein one of the most attractive men’s underwear brands out there – still after years and years as well as the emergence of an ocean of new, fierce niche brands.
