Underwear review: Manstore M316 Retro Brief

By Eric

From machinery to mineral fuel and electronics to automobiles, German engineering is in high demand around the world.   While not the largest export in volume, one of Germany’s best, however, is its underwear.  I recently tried styles from two brands influenced by German engineering, Manstore and Olaf Benz, both of which are sold on deadgoodundies.com.  (Although I’ve seen some pieces from Olaf Benz on American websites, Deadgoodundies carries a much broader selection.)  True – there are plenty of briefs from the United States and other countries, made of distinct fabrics and featuring distinct styling, there is something about the German engineering in these briefs that set them apart.

This will be a two-part review starting with the MANstore Retro brief. We will post the Olaf Benz review same time next week. So check back in next Thursday to get our thoughts on this brief as well.

Although the brand name, Manstore, makes me think of a website where I have to confirm that I’m over 18 before I enter, it is actually a well established underwear line.  Their offerings, however, are definitely adult rated.  I tried one of its tamer styles, the Manstore Retro Brief.  The brief features retro styling with contrast piping around the waistband and seams, but the low-rise cut is particularly modern.  The brief also features full coverage in the back.  The combination of the retro and the modern is very flattering.  I wish, however, that the pouch were a little more contoured and comfortable.

The brief is made of a 92% polyester/8% elastane blend that felt a little more rubbery than I would have preferred; although the brief is very light and thin and featured sort of a cool sheen, it didn’t feel completely soft against my skin for some reason.  Also, the color – brown with tan contrast – wasn’t my favorite.  That said, I liked that there was no pretense behind the synthetic fabric other than the sexy look and feel.

What Verdict
Style and look? Low cut brief featuring unique retro styling and a distinct fabric.
Suitable for? Relaxed environments; date nights; being seen.
Fit and quality? Low-cut with a comfortable pouch; good quality polyester/elastane blend
Is the price right? Approximately $41.77 which seems a little high.
Best thing about it? The retro styling updated with a modern cut and fabric.

Kiniki Underwear: An Xpress Review by Guys’ Underwear Blog

By Jeff

Many of you are probably already familiar with the Kiniki brand as they’ve been designing and manufacturing underwear and swimwear in England since 1970. Maybe you’re familiar with their ranges of tan-through swimwear or maybe you’ve seen some of their underwear in stores. But whether you’ve never heard of them before or have worn their products in the past, you should check out what they’ve been up to recently.

For this review, I tried underwear in three different lines. The Latimer, Carnaby and Camden lines each offer a comprehensive range of 11 hipsters, briefs, tangas and thongs. And all of the styles are made from a poly elastane material that offers high elasticity and low moisture absorbency.

The difference between each line is the main pattern. The Latimer line offers a bluish reptilian print, Carnaby has a vibrant multi-colored print that looks like clusters of growing crystals and Camden is made from a bold multi-colored geometric pattern. Some of the underwear is made entirely of these patterns, while others only incorporate the patterns in the waistbands. So it just depends on how bold you want to be.

Hipster – The hipster I tried has a wide silver waistband, but the rest of the material contains the pattern. Both the shaped front pouch and the seam up the back panel accentuate your contours and provide support. So the overall look is flattering because of the cut and bold because of the print. And they’re pretty comfortable.

Brief – What I like most about this brief is that it offers the freedom, support and sex appeal of a brief, but comes with a full-cut back. The brief I tried was made entirely from the patterned material, with the exception of the wide silver waistband.

Micro Brief – How do I describe the micro brief… Well, it’s very low rise, tighter fitting, and the back covers ¾ of your seat, so it’s pretty revealing. For all of these reasons, it’s not my usual style. The micro brief is for a guy who’s comfortable with less coverage than briefs offer.

My overall verdict is that Kiniki offers a range of styles, colors and patterns for just about every taste. So they offer something for every guy. I know that some guys prefer cotton, but the material in the ranges I tried is comfortable and durable.

Good job Kiniki! See an assortment of the wonderful styles described above and some of the other designs below.

What Verdict
Style and look? A variety of styles with distinctive colors/patterns.
Suitable for? The variety of styles means that you’ll find something that’s suitable for everything. Also, the material is good for working out because it transfers moisture to the surface for fast evaporation.
Fit and quality? Quality craftsmanship. The fits are comfortable, but the micro brief runs on the tighter side.
Is the price right? The styles I tried range in price from $12.99 to $15.99, so the prices are great.
Best thing about it? The variety of styles, colors and patterns.

Jockey Elance Bikini Brief: An Xpress Review by Guys’ Underwear Blog

By Val

Jockey has been a leader in the modern world of men’s underwear. Some would even say they invented the modern brief, the standard tighty whitey. Their brand name “Jockey” itself has become a name many give to mean a classic tighty whitey. Much like Speedo has done in the swimwear world. Although they have never pushed style to the point some newer brands have they are far from a cheap generic brand.

They are designed to be functional with style being a secondary aspect and tend to fall somewhere in the middle of the road. Jockey definitely is a brand to be admired, despite their use of spokes models who do not pose in underwear (ahem-Tebow). So today we are looking at a modern classic; the Jockey Elance bikini.

The Elance bikini comes in a variety of styles, but we will be focusing on the basic bikini brief. The Elance can be summed up in one word; simplicity. It is nothing fancy, no frills nor elaborate mechanisms of enhancement or decoration. It’s simple, and perfectly so.

Normally I would not be so happy about the lack of design but somehow this brief makes it work. The material is 100% cotton, and again typically I prefer a touch or spandex or Lycra for shape and support but it works here, let me explain.

The brief is made with a front and back sewn together; no pouch, no contour. This allows each man’s shape to become the brief. There is neither pushing nor shape forming done by the underwear. You shape the underwear. The lack of an elastic quality allows the cotton to form to your real shape. And since the brief is smaller in the style of a bikini you don’t flop around excessively, you pretty much stay in place.

The same is true with the back; the underwear takes on your natural shape. It’s almost like the memory foam mattresses that just contour to your body making them perfect for every shape. The Elance does come in a variety of colors, I think white is the best. Again because it continues the simple look, it’s pure and has a semi-sheer quality making it sexy as hell.

What makes it so sexy is that it’s not trying to be sexy. The underwear does not draw attention it leaves the focus on the man. Just look at the accompanying pictures. So it’s beautiful in a subtly classic way.

The bikini is also very comfortable. I wore these undies and they kept me comfy and supported and happy. They are great everyday underwear. They are completely designed for great functionality. They do what underwear is expected to do. You don’t even know they’re on you after a while, they’re great.

Just like the basic look and style of the Elance the wear is just as simplistic. Typically I feel underwear needs a touch of some elastic material like Lycra or spandex, however the Elance works just fine without it.

The cotton stretches out and forms a personalized pouch. And since it is a bikini style with elastic legs it keeps your package is place without sliding down the leg or into some uncomfortable position. So you are supported in a pretty ideal way. It may not be the best for rigorous athletic activities but it worked at the gym.

The pure light cotton coverage also is great for an airy fresh breathable feel. They are great for lounging around. In particularly after several washings when they get that old t-shirt feel. Best thing next to being naked! The Jockey Elance bikini is a pair of underwear that will complete any collection.

What Verdict
Style and look? The style and look are clean and light. They do not draw attention to themselves and are great at letting the man in them make the statement. At the same time the light fabric is subtly very sexy. They let you show off without being overtly trying.
Suitable for? Great for everyday wear. They are comfortable and supportive. They work under jeans, suits, shorts and at home on their own. Perfect for a wet underwear contest; just a tip.
Fit and quality? The fit is great. As mentioned the cotton basically forms to you and does so without becoming saggy or lose the way other 100% cotton underwear does. The quality is good. It should last a while and actually will become more comfortable after wear and washings.
Is the price right? The price is great. I got my pair at Macy’s at $19 for a package of three. I kept one and gave the other 2 to models we worked with. What a deal! Thank you Jay (he bought them for me)..
Best thing about it? They are an understated and simple pair of underwear. They work in all the ways you need them to. They aren’t loud or attention grabbing, they don’t make it look like you’re trying so hard. Although sometime that is good, there are other times you don’t want to be so #.

Guys in underwear – New Gregg Homme collections. See the steaming pics.

It is now time to give back to men the sexy underwear they have been craving for…” Eric Boisvert, president of Gregg Homme, announced today.  “The men of today have stronger needs to seduce and they have the guts to express it: they are ready to move up one notch and it’s exactly where we are taking them.” he continues.

We agree!

And so Gregg Homme introduce their newest collections which are all about sex, seduction, teasing, and revealing.

With collection names like SCANDAL, TEASE, STEAM and KINK (to name a few), it is no secrets that Gregg Homme will succeed in a field that they master quite well: making men’s blood pressure go up (or it is their partner’s?).

The “piece de resistance” is irrefutably the XCESS collection: an ultra fine gauge microfiber (goodbye fabric, hello second skin!) with a low cut front pouch enhanced with three light metal alloy X’s. Making a statement was never made that easy.

Trims and details complete this most unique new collection: innovative zippers, straps, buckles and strategically placed transparencies bring the styling and design to unparalleled zeniths. Gregg Homme surely delivers in the accesory department.

Zippers, straps and buckles really are the new black in men’s underwear fashion this fall, huh?

Well, we like it.
